Course Description

This Understanding Substance Misuse RQF qualification helps to develop increased understanding of these issues and the possible responses and interventions. The programme aims to:

  • Provide a nationally accredited certificated programme in a wide range of substance misuse issues and the variety of responses and interventions available
  • Provide a flexible learning opportunity that is accessible to a wide range of learners
  • Provide the student with knowledge and understanding that can be used by those who either personally, voluntary or professionally have a special interest in this field.

The programme raises an opportunity for personal development and occupational competence in an area identified by government policy as one requiring special attention. The overall Government policy is laid out in “Drug Strategy 2010 – Reducing Demand, Restricting Supply, Building Recovery: Supporting people to live a drug-free life.”

This programme should contribute to the strategy through an educational model. The programme is a great resource for anyone interested in the subject but  isparticularly aimed at those who work directly and regularly with people with alcohol or drugs misuse problems or those who would like to pursue a career in these areas.

This course in particular is widely used to train drugs and alcohol workers, as well as generic professionals serving young and/or vulnerable people, to support them in achieving their DANOS competences. Mapping to the DANOS competences has shown that this programme covers a broad range of relevant DANOS units. The course provides also comprehensive “underpinning knowledge” for the substance misuse modules of the NVQ and SVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care.

The qualification has been mapped to the Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS) and the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework. It helps people to develop their knowledge, skills and competence in the following DANOS units:

AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists
AB2 Support individuals who are substance users
AB5 Assess and act upon immediate risk of danger to substance users
AD1 Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects
AF2 Carry out assessment to identify and prioritise needs

This course allows you to gain a fully recognised RQF (Regulated Qualifications Framework) qualification in this subject. These are nationally recognised qualifications that are superseding the old NVQ framework qualifications.

Our aim is to provide you with the best deal available, therefore registration fee, certification fee and full tutor support is included in the course price for you.

    Very enjoyable

I found the course to be very enjoyable. The modules were marked and returned in a timely manner with clear instructions from the tutor, and positive comments which spurred me on to complete the course. My only concern is that the accreditation is not widely recognised.

    Would recommend to anyone!

At first I found this course a burden and thought I would have little time to complete it with my work commitments, but through the uplifting comments made by my tutor Wendy and regular contact with Shaun my liaison.

I completed this course and feel that I have made an achievement that will help me better understand my work with the clients I support.

thanks again to those involved in my course and I would recommend this course to anyone interested in undertaking it.

    Invaluable Support Provided

I have found the course to be very interesting and informative, it was delivered in a well laid out format that was very clear and easy to follow. These type of distance learning courses are extremely useful to individuals who have other commitments.

The support online from the tutors has been invaluable, they are always there to guide you in the right direction. Huge thanks to Wendy Smith and the rest of the staff at NCC Home Learning.

    I would recommend this course

I found this course easy to follow, with helpful hints and Reading lists. My Tutor gave me valuable feedback within a few weeks of submiting modules. The only reason I will not be doing further Courses is that I am due to retire in a couple of years and have done lots of Training in the past. However I would recommend this and other training to younger members of staff.
