Course Description

This introductory course is designed to provide an understanding of how to support children’s development in different settings. The course develops the learners’ knowledge of many aspects of childcare, such as how to promote healthy eating in children by preparing activities and experiences which encourage healthy foods, and how to provide a wide range of appropriate play activities.

It also covers the safety of children, and how to make the environment that they are in as safe as possible. This involves the knowledge of how to carry out safety checks, how to respond to hazardous or emergency situations, and how to manage a range of common childhood illnesses. Equality of opportunity in children’s development is covered, with the understanding of the child care practitioner’s role in promoting children’s rights, and how different children may need to be responded to in different ways.

Working as part of a team is important when working with young children, so the course builds on the knowledge of how to work well as part of a team, the necessity of co-operation and how to carry out reviews of the team’s work.

Module 1 – Encouraging Children to Eat Healthily
Module 2 – Create a Safe Environment for Young Children
Module 3 – Working in a Team
Module 4 – Contribute to the Equality of Opportunity in Support of Young Children’s Development
Module 5 – Provide a Range of Appropriate Play Activities for Young Children
