This level four course is comprised of seven modules which are designed to give the learner a good basic knowledge of the main theories underlying the most commonly practiced approaches to counselling and psychotherapy including the main approaches used when counselling children. It is a requirement for registration as a counsellor or psychotherapist that a candidate has obtained a certificate evidencing successful completion of a theoretical course providing a basic knowledge of the main theories in psychotherapy and counselling. Ensure to check within your organisation or local registration as to what is expected when working with different age groups of children. Additionally, the candidate will need to complete around 400-450 hours of supervised practical work after this course, if they want to become a fully registered counsellor. Guidance to help with the practical work is discussed in module 1 and in greater detail in module 7.
The learner will note that the terms counselling, psychotherapy and therapy are used interchangeably, as are the terms counsellor, psychotherapist and therapist; no apologies are made for this as these terms are used interchangeably in most of the literature on counselling and psychology. Please also note that throughout the course the client will be referred to as a client or sometimes a child or young person. In all circumstances this is relatable to working with children, but the learner will gain the transferable skills of also working with adults. The term clinician is used in some texts on counselling and psychotherapy, this term has overtones of medical qualification and has been deliberately avoided in this course. Any learner who successfully completes this course is not medically qualified, and if presented with a client who raises the slightest suspicion of requiring medical or psychiatric treatment, should advise such a client to consult their medical practitioner.
Much of the early work in counselling and psychotherapy was carried out in Europe and particularly Germany and Austria; as a result some German terminology is universally used, particularly in the early psychotherapeutic approaches. Where such words are used in this text, an English translation is offered, or where the word does not translate literally, an attempt has been made to describe the concept referred to. Since many of the early psychologists and psychotherapists were Jewish, they were forced to flee Europe and Nazi persecution in the late 1930s, many of them making their homes in the USA. This lends a North American flavour and the incorporation of a good deal of American terminology to counselling and psychotherapy from the 1940s onwards.
No prior knowledge or experience is required to enrol on this course. This is perfect for students first embarking in this area or those aiming to broaden their knowledge of assisting and counselling children and adolescents.
This course is assessed using a series of written assignments that are each designed to test your comprehension of the materials taught on the course syllabus. These will need to be submitted to your personal tutor for marking, whereupon they will then provide you with advice and feedback on how to maximise your learning experience.
Please note: no external examinations are required.
At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement from Quality Licence Scheme and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the components the learner has completed as part of the course).

The course operates through a study pack and access to your own personal tutor. Once you have chosen your course we will send you your study pack, which you will be required to work through before completing the course.
Depending on the course you have chosen, you will either be required to complete assignments and submit these for marking as the course progresses and/or be required to sit an end exam. The end exam could be in the form of multiple choice questions, or be an invigilated exam at a registered test centre.
Your completed assignments will need to be sent to your tutor for marking/assessment, you will then receive written feedback and guidance. It may be possible to submit your assignments by email, however you will need to check this with your tutor. Please be aware that your assignments will be maintained by NCCHL for moderation and audit purposes.

Depending on the course you have chosen, and the amount of time you can commit, it could take from 6 weeks to 12 months to complete your course.
The duration of the course is largely down to you though. The beauty of home learning is that it allows you complete flexibility to fit your studies around your lifestyle and other commitments. You can dedicate as much, or as little, time as you want to your studies - no one will be chasing you for your work or asking why you haven’t submitted an assignment.

Certain types of qualifications, A-levels and GCSEs for example, do require you to sit an invigilated exams at a registered test centre. Yes, there are no geographical limits to where you can study.
You just need to be aware that all tutors are based in the UK and work may need to be submitted to them via post, although in most cases e-mail can be used.
Where the course requires that you sit an invigilated exam at a test centre, there are many exam centres outside of the UK. However, we would advise that you check with us before purchasing one of these courses if you want to study from abroad.

Whilst it is possible to submit multiple assignments at the same time, we advise that our learners submit only one at a time. We want our learners to develop as they progress through their course, and find this is best achieved when a student embarks on a new module having taken into account tutor feedback from the previous submission.
