Course Description

There are an extensive range of subjects covered within the 7 units of the course. The intricate details of childcare are explored, from the physical needs to the emotional needs. Behaviour management is perhaps one of the most important aspects of the course, as this is where you will stand out from other applicants. Understanding the theories behind a child's behaviour is important, also how to manage these behaviours effectively to ensure the child is as happy and content as possible.

Other subjects covered in the course include child abuse and the legal framework, and your roles and responsibilities as a carer, counsellor or parent. This course is suitable for any individual who has contact with children in any capacity.

The latter sections of the course focus on building an understanding of the business aspects of childminding. It is understandable that in an industry such as this, the laws surrounding childcare have to be thorough. This course will ensure the learner understands how to register with the proper authorities and provides details on becoming a member of PACEY (Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years). Other important issues include, health and safety regulations, drawing up contracts and agreements as well as how many children you can care for in differing circumstances.

When entering the childcare industry, there are a few mandatory elements that you will have to secure before practicing. They are neither difficult to obtain or time consuming:
- Undertake a First Aid qualification, which only takes one day to complete and can be attained through your local St John's Ambulance Brigade at a low price.
- You will be required to register with Ofsted. If you are planning to offer childcare from your home they may need to conduct a visit.
