Special Educational Needs (SEN) overview

The term ‘Special Educational Needs’ refers to emotional and physical disabilities that can hamper a student’s learning. These difficulties or disabilities make learning and communicating challenging. Students with special educational needs can find it difficult to conform to acceptable patterns of behaviour.

If you work with children and young people, this course is right for you. As part of this home study course, you will complete six modules.

You will develop a broad understanding of special educational needs, as well as the provision of SEN or additional learning provisions in schools. This course encourages you to examine school policies, the role of outside agencies, the school-designated SENCO or Special Education Needs Coordinator, and various SENCO resources available.

There are common SEN conditions displayed by pupils, with challenging behaviour being one of them. Learning to manage this behaviour is important. Helping the student to identify and modify behaviour that could be causing distress to themselves and their peers is covered in the fifth module.

The final module looks at inclusive education and how mainstream education can still be inaccessible at times for students with special educational needs.

What will you gain from studying Special Educational Needs (SEN)?

By the end of the course, you will have an understanding of;

  • Child and young people development
  • How to support students with additional learning needs to meet their learning potential
  • How to support disabled children and young people in mainstream education
  • The importance of positive practice with special educational needs students
  • Behavioural, emotional and social difficulties faced by some students
  • A chance to learn at your own pace

After completing this SENCO course, you will receive a Certificate of Achievement from ABC Awards.

This Level 3 qualification is a great addition to your CV. Students can go on to study a variety of related courses, including additional qualification in SEN education, as well as ‘awareness raising ‘courses.

The course provides a firm foundation for career progression within special needs education, both in mainstream schools and SEN-specialist education centres.

    I have enjoyed every moment of my study with NCC. My tutor has been amazingly supportive and the help has been there when required. I am really looking forward with the completion of this course to take into the job I have always dreamed about doing. This course has also given me the confidence to strive in what I want out of a career and has made me more confident as a person. I am looking forward to receiving my certificate and begin a life long journey into a new job. NCC have been amazing and I would recommend them to anyone who is looking into further studies to get them into the job they truly want.
