Course Description

Autism is a diverse and mystifying condition that has been the focus of much scientific research over the last few decades. The Autism Awareness course aims to develop your understanding of autism and gives practical suggestions when working with autistic individuals.

Today, autism refers to a whole range of social, language and communication problems. Severity ranges from hardly there at all, often undiagnosed and even unrecognised, to severe, where it is virtually impossible for people to participate in society.

There are no boundaries between the conditions Kanner and Asperger identified, often people are in-between, whether in between Asperger’s syndrome and Kanner’s, or in between “normal” and Asperger’s syndrome. Therefore, collectively we refer to “autistic spectrum disorder”, or ASD, as this allows for the differences in both symptoms and severity. A person without ASD is called a neuro-typical.

According to the National Autistic Society, there are approximately 700,000 people in the UK who have autism. This means that more than 1 out of 100 have this condition. Overall it effects 2.7 million people each day if you include the families of the individuals.

The term autism can be used to describe all of the diagnoses on the autism spectrum. This includes both class and high-functioning autism, and Asperger’s syndrome. Autism is a lifelong condition and if individuals do not receive the right support it can have a detrimental effect, not just on the person living with autism, but it will impact people around them such as family and friends.

This course will enable you to become familiar with various approaches to autism, have increased awareness of how to obtain a diagnosis and enable you to understand genetic environmental causes of autism. The Autism Awareness course will also explain how research in other conditions can help research into autism.

The aim of this course is to provide a better awareness of the term “autism” and “autistic spectrum disorder” (ASD).
Define autism
Understand the difference between autism and Asperger’s syndrome
Explain the gender differences
Identify conditions related to ASD
Explain how research in other conditions can help research into autism

Didn't want the course to end!

I enjoyed the whole course and found it compulsive. All Jo's comments were helpful and encouraging as I wasn't sure that my learning days might be over, being an older person. Jo sent me links to further and deeper topics related to the course which I really enjoyed reading, I didn't really want the course to end, which is why I have now started another. I also am very grateful to Shaun for answering my questions. Thankyou.

Helped me to get a job!

Doing this course helped towards me getting a job working with autistic children. I am now doing a distance course through Birmingham University to continue my learning on autism. My employer has said they wish to see my certificate when I receive it, which brings validity to the course.
