Autism Awareness overview

The social and communication problems experienced by autistic children make it harder for them to engage in learning. Those at the higher end of the autistic spectrum can find it impossible to engage with the world around them.

Working with autistic children and adults is rewarding, yet challenging. It is a lifelong condition. It is not ‘phase’ or something that children ‘grow out of’.

Autism refers to a range of social, language and communication problems. The severity ranges from mild to severe, although there are many children and adults who have not been diagnosed.

Autism awareness courses online aim to raise awareness, share good practice and help practitioners to create an environment whereby autistic children and adults feel less intimidated and pressured. Creating a comfortable environment is often achieved by making the smallest and simplest of changes.

This nine-module course has a broad base, covering;

  • What is Autism and how do some children and adults display issues with social, language and communication
  • The triad of impairments, social and emotional, language and communication and thirdly, flexibility in thought
  • The causes and diagnosis of Autism and current approaches, along with practical suggestions for working with Autistic individuals
  • Finally, myths relating to Autism are identified and explained

What can you do after completing Autism Awareness qualifications?

The National Autistic Society estimate that over 700,000 children and adults are affected by autism in the UK. This figure will be a lot higher as many individuals can be misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all.

Autism courses via distance learning can be instrumental in progressing your career, as well as opening new career avenues.

The course is assessed through a series of tutor marked assignments and a short, multiple choice exam. Learners receive a Level 2 Certificate in Autism Awareness, a valued qualification in many education and care settings.

    Didn't want the course to end!

    I enjoyed the whole course and found it compulsive. All Jo's comments were helpful and encouraging as I wasn't sure that my learning days might be over, being an older person. Jo sent me links to further and deeper topics related to the course which I really enjoyed reading, I didn't really want the course to end, which is why I have now started another. I also am very grateful to Shaun for answering my questions. Thankyou.

    Helped me to get a job!

    Doing this course helped towards me getting a job working with autistic children. I am now doing a distance course through Birmingham University to continue my learning on autism. My employer has said they wish to see my certificate when I receive it, which brings validity to the course.
