Course Description

The Autism Awareness for Educators programme has been designed and created to provide students with a greater knowledge and understanding of this subject area. Over one in one hundred children now are diagnosed with autism, although this figure is increasing all the time and it is likely that many more children remain undiagnosed. This means that autism is found in most schools. Larger schools will have several children with autism at any given time. As awareness increases and diagnostic criteria change, it is likely that all classrooms will have at least one child with autism in the future.

Children on the autistic spectrum think and experience the world and other people differently, resulting in them misinterpreting and misunderstanding. Educators therefore, need to be aware of how they can best support children on the autistic spectrum to receive an appropriate education, get along with others, and function independently in the world. Wherever possible, children with autism should be educated in a mainstream school, which means that classrooms must be inclusive, balancing the needs of the autistic child with the needs of others, creating an appropriate learning environment for all. Other children with autism may need to be educated in independent schools, residential schools, special needs schools or schools for gifted children.

Helped me to further my career!

I found the course very interesting and has helped me to further my career, I would recommend NCC Home Learning to friends and work colleagues as studying from home, at my own pace was very helpful with a busy life day to day.

Thank you to Jo Fox who was always very quick to send me feedback and pointers on how I could improve my work.

Would definitely use again in the future

I found the content of the course well structured and the slides easy to understand and informative. The course allowed me to reflect on my own practice and implement other strategies I have not previously thought of.

I would recommend this course to those currently working with individuals with ASCs and I would definitely use NCCHL again in the future.

Will definitely be doing another course

I will definitely be doing another course, possibly the ADHD course but definitely something to do with education. I found the set up of the course easy to follow which enabled me to complete each module efficiently.

    Really enjoyed it!

This course was easy to follow and I really enjoyed doing it. The structure of the course worked well for me and enabled me to complete each module to the best of my ability.

The modules were marked fast and the feedback was always helpful. I have recommended NCC learning to some friends and I will certainly be doing another course later in the year.

    I really enjoyed studying this

Although much of the course was familiar to me, I really enjoyed studying it. I found the materials were excellent and that the assignments were interesting as they highlighted the application of what I had read rather than just rehashing theory.
I found it particularly helpful to consider the assignments in the context of my job.
I am currently doing the Understanding ADHD course and I wish there were more available with NCC.

Both course and support very good

Overall I found the course and support very good. I had to chase feedback for a couple of the modules. I found the wording on a couple of questions in the final exam confusing e.g. one question asked for percentages but the answers were in decimals.

Looking forward to signing up for my next course

I have now completed the course as stated above; I have really enjoyed the process of learning with NCC and wish to continue on to the TA Diploma course. The course content and material was easy to follow and the support staff easy to contact for relevant advice and guidance. The tutor feedback was precise, clear and easy to follow which in turn helped me to complete my next steps. I would recommend learning with NCC and I am looking forward to signing up for my next course.

I found the Autism Awareness Course for Educators very interesting and written in easy to understand language. The support I received from my tutor was positive and constructive points raised, I received my feedback in a timely fashion and this kept me focussed and motivated. My experience of using NCC Home Learning has been very positive and I will definitely be back for more at some point in the future.
