Course Description

This Criminal Psychology course can be studied without any prior knowledge or can be studied as a follow-up programme from our original level 3 Criminology course. In this field of study there are a number of different terms: Forensic Psychology; Criminological Psychology; Legal Psychology; Police Psychology; and the course you are taking here, Criminal Psychology. These are all branches of Psychology which independently deal with different aspects of the psychology of the criminal, including criminal behaviour and the law, punishment and rehabilitation.

Criminal Psychology takes very much a broad overview of the discipline and is, quite simply, the psychology of criminal behaviour. There can be some overlap between the terms Criminal Psychology and Forensic Psychology. In fact, it is argued that they should be regarded as inseparable, rather than two separate fields of study.

For this reason, in this course we will attempt to understand each aspect of a criminal’s life and provide you with an introduction to start thinking about aspects of Forensic Psychology. The course will start with possible bio psychosocial and developmental causes of criminal behaviour to the nature of the crime itself; the role of psychology in the investigative process; finishing with a brief discussion of the impact of psychology within the criminal justice system.

The topics covered range from theories of crime to a detailed examination of the various types of crime (e.g. serial killing, arson, terrorism), and a look at profiling techniques and other investigative tools such as interviewing and lie detection. The last part of the course covers various topics within legal psychology, considered a sub-discipline of both Forensic Psychology and Criminal Psychology. Our aim is to provide you with the best deal available when purchasing your Criminal Psychology course, therefore registration fee, certification fee and full tutor support is included in the course price for you.

    Great experience!

I recently completed the criminal psychology course and I found it really interesting and easy to follow. The material was fascinating to me and as someone who had an interest in psychology for years, this course was right up my street. My tutor was very helpful and the questions weren't too difficult, considering having a full time job alongside it.
    Overall great experience.

    Would definitely recommend NCC

I am halfway through my Criminal Psychology diploma (level 4) course and I have been very happy with it so far and would definitely recommend NCC because the course covers a great range of topics that most people will find interesting.

The coursebook is thorough and has a good overview of all relevant theories. The topics of crime covered in the module are broad and varied, with my favourites being arson and developmental theories. Content is interesting and not too heavy and my tutor gives me good feedback for progression and answers any questions I have. They praise well and give useful criticism when needed. An action plan is set for you so you can try and stay on track.

Overall a great course and I might consider doing another with NCC if it is relevant to my career progression.

    Dear Chester
Many thanks for your review of the Criminal Psychology Level 4 Diploma, we are really pleased that you would recommend NCC Home Learning and that you are enjoying the courses to date. We note the point you have raised about a pass mark and you will appreciate that this can be subjective, but we will consider when we review at our next quality assurance meeting. Further, we will also ask our Programme Team to feedback to you regarding the statistics you mention to clarify what changes may be required. With regard to tutor contact, we work internationally and as such we need to monitor the communications that are going back and forward between the tutors and students which is why we route all correspondence through our centre. Additionally, in many instances our team are able to answer many of the questions raised. We thank you for taking the time to point out these areas and we will ensure that they are considered for the future benefit of NCC Home Leaning students. We wish you all the very best for the remainder of your course and if you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Kind regards,
    NCC Team

    Accreditation is not well respected

The material is well structured and the assignments have serious learning outcomes, but the accreditation for the diploma is perhaps not well respected. It would be nice to see it linked to a reputed university. In my opinion the material is sound and the assessment system sufficiently robust to be able to be taken on by a mainstream university. Also a level 5 diploma would be more useful as it could be used for work permit purposes for those seeking work abroad. A level 4 diploma is not taken very seriously when seeking overseas work. I am not sure if it has credibility in the UK.

    Dear Richard Moore
Thanks so much for leaving a review of our Criminal Psychology Diploma. We’re so glad to hear that you found the course materials well-structured, and that the learning outcomes were sufficient for your needs.

Our Criminal Psychology course is accredited by NCFE who are a nationally recognised awarding organisation and one of the largest in the UK.
Unfortunately as NCC are a private home learning company, we don't link with universities as they offer different types of courses than we supply. Universities generally supply degree courses which NCC don't currently or plan to provide. It is great to hear that you think our materials and system are of university standard, however!

We supply this course as a Level 4 Diploma, as the activities and materials are benchmarked at this level against Ofqual standards. As we are a home learning company, we don't currently supply any Level 5 Diplomas due to the advanced nature of the assessment, which would be difficult to achieve via distance learning.
Thanks again for taking the time to leave such a detailed review.

    Kind regards,
    Sarah

    Initial problem with tutor fixed

I seemed to have a problem with my initial tutor and found that I wasn't getting my submitted work back within a reasonable amount of time but since Philip Boyce took over the tutor role everything has been fine. Customer Services helped resolve the issue and have been helpful ever since and thanks to Shaun for his email replies when work was submitted on-line.

Had some worries at first but had great support

I found changing tutors mid year daunting, but my preconceived worries proved to be silly and continued with good support. Thank you Shaun for your continued support throughout and Phillip for your kind feedback.

    I learned a lot!

I really enjoyed my studies. I have learned a lot of new information. Immersing myself in studies meant there was time for me to just study and learn something new about an area that fascinates me. The course was run promptly and efficiently, any technical difficulties (mostly my fault!) were handled swiftly and efficiently. There are a wide range of courses available so anybody can find something that interests them. My situation means going to college to study is impossible for me, distance learning gives you the opportunity to keep learning whilst still maintaining your responsibilities. It has worked very well for me.

    Great tutor - very insightful

I am continuing with a course in Advanced Psychology. Overall I have enjoyed doing the course very much. For most of the course my tutor was Tom Hanlon, I found his feedback clear and insightful and encouraged me to consider different/additional perspectives. He was also very encouraging of my continuing to study.

Helped me decide to go to university

The criminal psychology course was an excellent follow on from criminology and has helped me make the dcision to now go on and study a degree in crime and criminology with the University of Portsmouth. The criminal psychology course was very diverse and covered many angles relating to crime and psychological side of it. The learning materials were easy to use and in understandle terms. Contact with a tutor was also sufficient and responses were quick and helpful. All round I found the course enjoyable and interesting.
