Course Description

Creative writing is one of the most enjoyable past-times and whether you are writing just for enjoyment or because you want to make it a career, this course will help you to explore your writing and find ways to improve it.  The course includes writing exercises and assignments that you will submit to your tutor.

Module 1 will help you look at your writing and experiences of writing.  The idea is to explore your motivation and identify your aims for the course.  You will use this exploration to create a written piece that will give your tutor an idea of who you are and what sort of writer you are.

Module 2 will explore different types of texts and different genres.  An understanding of different types of texts and genres will help you to make informed choices about your own writing.  Most professional writers will tell you that they have a passion for reading and this module will ask you to explore your own reading habits and make critical readings of texts to understand why you like or dislike them.

Module 3 looks at starting to write.  It has tips on how to start, how to choose what to write and generate ideas for writing.  It also covers writing style, how to write dialogue and how to create characters.

Modules 4 to 11 each look at a different form of writing, covering short stories, poetry, longer texts, novels, life writing, writing for younger readers, non-fiction and scriptwriting.  Each module will look at examples and at ideas and techniques for generating written pieces.  Each module will also include exercises so you can try out some of the different types of writing and genres.

Module 12 looks at the editorial process and why it is so important as well as at how you can edit your own writing and learn from editing and feedback.

Module 13 looks at publication and how you might move towards achieving this if this is your aim.

Finally, Module 14 considers what it means to be a writer and how you continue in your writing when you have finished your course.  You have taken an important step by choosing to take a creative writing course.  It shows you are serious about your writing.  But it is only a beginning – your writing will be a lifetime commitment!

Our aim is to provide you with the best deal available when purchasing this Creative Writing Diploma, therefore registration fee, certification fee and full tutor support is included in the course price for you.

    Creative Writing Diploma

This has been one of the best courses I have done for my personal self-development. This course has given me the confidence to pursue my writing further and even to set up a creative writers group at my local library, I hope this course will lead onto bigger and better things for myself.

    Given me motivation

I enjoyed the course and it has given me the motivation to continue writing. As mentioned on the student survey I completed previously, it would have been good to be able to contact Kathleen easier when I had questions, rather than having to email Sally Swift.

    Kick started my imagination

I have always had a passion for writing, but with all of my work stress, I went through a dry writing season. This course has regenerated and kick started my imagination and I am a better writer because of it. Thank you for this enlightening course and the incredible constructive criticism given by my tutor.
