Assessment

To achieve this GCSE qualification in English Language, you will be assessed across all 5 units and will be expected to complete 2 written paper-based exams and one spoken language assessment.

Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing – this 1 hour and 45 minute exam makes up to 50% of your GCSE grade and is split into two sections. In Section A, this reading test will ask you to read one piece of literature/fiction before asking you to answer one short form question, two longer form questions and one extended question. In Section B, your descriptive or narrative writing skills will be tested through the use of one extended writing question (24 marks for content and 16 marks for technical accuracy).

Paper 2: Writers’ Viewpoints and Perspectives – this 1 hour and 45 minute exam makes up to 50% of your GCSE grade and is split into two sections. In Section A, this reading test will give you one non-fiction text and one literary non-fiction text, where you’ll then be expected to answer one short form question, two longer form questions and one extended question. In Section B, this writing test will test your knowledge of writing to present a different viewpoint. It contains one extended question.

Non-examination assessment: Spoken Language - whilst this assessment doesn’t make up your GCSE grade, you will still need to complete it in order to earn this qualification. During this assessment you will be tested on your presenting skills; ability to respond to questions and feedback, and your use of Standard English.

Please note: Students are fully responsible for the arrangement and funding of any examinations required.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a GCSE in English awarded by the AQA that will be graded based on the new 9-1 scale (9 being the highest grade and equivalent to A* under the old system).
