Course Description

This course explains the provisions of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS) and how they may impact on employees working, or planning to work in the health and social care sector.  Module one looks in detail at how mental capacity is assessed and the various ways in which lack of capacity can be planned for, including advance decisions, lasting powers of attorney, the office of public guardian and the role of the court of protection.  Module two examines key elements of the DOLS legislation, including the assessment process, looking at how an authorisation is obtained, the Code of Practice and the role of the Court of Protection.

The programme is divided into two modules with module one covering MCA and module two covering DOLS. This material is designed to be used as support material and as a reading document to support workshop style delivery, or as a flexible reading package that you can study and read through at your own pace and learning preference.

This course is an awareness course, which when completed will enable you to achieve a level 2 certificate. Learners will gain a valuable and in-depth awareness and knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and the Deprivation of Liberty Standards.

Awarding Organisation

At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement from ABC Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the details of all the units the learner has completed as part of the course).

The course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards’ Quality Licence Scheme. This means that NCC Resources Limited has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet certain quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to an Ofqual regulated qualification but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills towards regulated qualifications in the future. The unit summary can be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 2 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner.

ABC Awards is a leading national Awarding Organisation, regulated by Ofqual, and the Welsh Government. It has a long-established reputation for developing and awarding high quality vocational qualifications across a wide range of industries.
