Course Description
The Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and The Criminal Justice System course assumes prior knowledge of FASD together with the primary and secondary disabilities caused by FASD. We will use only the term FASD throughout this course, but the student should also consider ARND and ARBD as being associated problems. Between these three terms there will be a range of effects including physical, mental, behavioural and learning difficulties, the majority of which will have lifelong implications to the individual.
The course covers the secondary behaviours associated with FASD which may cause the individual to be more likely to break the law more frequently than someone unaffected by FASD. Assisting an individual with FASD through the court and trial procedures and understanding the requirements that need to be in place for the successful management of FASD within the court system.
