Course Description

Economics A Level

Do you need an A Level within 12 months to get into University?

We offer a range of A Levels where we guarantee to prioritise the marking of your coursework so you are fully ready to take your exams in June of each year.

WE DO NOT CHARGE EXTRA FOR THIS SERVICE.

An Advanced Level in Economics is a perfect qualification for those wishing to acquire knowledge and understanding of the subject to enable them to study at a higher level at university. It also provides a progression route for further training whilst in employment.

This specification is designed to:

  • develop an interest and enthusiasm for economics and its contribution to the wider economic and social environment
  • develop an understanding of a range of concepts and acquire an ability to use these concepts in a variety of different contexts
  • develop an enquiring, critical and thoughtful 'economist's mind'
  • practise skills, qualities and attitudes which will equip them for the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities of adult and working life
  • develop an understanding of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life
  • apply economic concepts and theories in a range of contexts and appreciate their value and limitations in explaining real world phenomena
  • analyse, explain and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy and the role of government within it

AS Level

At AS, this specification will enable candidates to develop an understanding of, and an insight into, micro and macroeconomics:

Unit 1: ECON1 Markets and Market Failure
Examination: 1 hour 15 minutes

  • The Economic Problem
  • The Allocation of Resources in Competitive Markets
  • Production and Efficiency
  • Market Failure
  • Government Intervention in the Market

Unit 2: ECON2 The National Economy
Examination: 1 hour 15 minutes

  • Introduction to Macroeconomics
  • How the Macro-economy works
  • Economic performance
  • Macroeconomic policy

A2 Level

At A2, candidates develop the micro and macroeconomics already learnt at AS, considering economic concepts and theories in greater depth and recognising the values and limitations of economic models.

Both A2 modules explore two contemporary and relevant contexts: the global context, which includes the impact of globalisation on UK economic performance; and the European Union context, embracing the effect of EU membership and economic policy on the UK economy:

Unit 3: ECON3 Business Economics and the Distribution of Income
Examination: 2 hours

  • The Firm: Objectives, Costs and Revenues
  • Competitive Markets
  • Marketing Strategies
  • Concentrated Markets
  • The Labour Market
  • Government Intervention in the Market

Unit 4: ECON4 The National and International Economy
Examination: 2 hours

  • Macroeconomic Indicators
  • Managing the national economy
  • The international economy
