NCC have completed and office sweepstake to celebrate the 2014 World Cup and boost yearlong fundraising efforts.

Excited by this summer’s footballing feast, NCC Home Learning staff paid for a tournament lucky dip and decided that half the proceeds should go to the Steve Prescott Foundation.

The eager entrants paid £2 for a random selection of 2 world cup competitors and the lucky individual with the world cup winning team claimed all.

After raising £71 in a charity sports day back in May we decided to keep the fundraising ambitions alive ahead of our huge cycling event next month, and managed to raise another £17.50 to chip away at our grand target of £500 for the Foundation.

As the hopes of a home nation victory soon came crashing down, the focus was quickly directed to the sweepstake prize, and here’s how the events unfolded;

We embarked on our fundraising challenge earlier this year and our goal is to take part in as many sporting events as possible to help raise money for the charity of local sports hero Steve Prescott, who sadly passed away after a 7 year battle with cancer.

Our focus is now to defeat a 20 mile cycle challenge which is set to take place on the 9th August. For more details on the event or to make a donation to this great cause please visit https://www.justgiving.com/NCCHomeLearning/

As training now gets in full swing we will be sharing our inevitable stories of blood sweat and tears, so keep an eye out on our website for all the action.

NCC Home Learning offer a range of over 350 distance learning courses from Teaching Assistant to Criminal Psychology.

Watching TV as a way of expanding your knowledge would no doubt be shunned by many academics, but there are some modern shows that do hold some educational value. TV has its uses, whether it’s to kill 15 minutes or become totally obsessed with the latest series of Breaking Bad. Linguists are often attributing an improvement in their foreign language skills by watching TV shows, so what else could you learn from a modern TV show?

1. Bear Grylls: Born Survivor

Bear Grylls is an ex SAS soldier who specialises in extreme survival. Bear was left paralysed for 12 months after suffering 3 crushed vertebrae in a parachuting accident. After a full recovery, Bear went on to reach the summit of Mount Everest and in turn forged a highly successful TV career. Navigation through the dense jungles of Belize with nothing but a commando knife may not immediately strike you as useful information but survival principles have foundations that can apply to many situations. The diverse filming locations alone are enough to broaden your knowledge of our environment, couple that with the constant stream of facts about the area’s history and you have the perfect recipe for bolstering your quiz skills.

2. Mythbusters

Ever had someone down the pub tell you a questionable fact that niggles away at your brain? Well Mythbusters (now in it’s 13th series) is entirely based around proving/disproving urban myths. With over 900 myths tackled so far, there is a serious back catalogue for you to get your teeth into! A personal favourite was the group tackling the old cartoon myth of elephants being afraid of mice, incredibly tests proved that elephants are in fact scared of mice. If you don’t believe me, the video is available here!

3. Natural World

Possibly the mother of all educational TV is Natural world, with just under 500 episodes filmed since 1983 is Natural World. This takes light entertainment a little further and explores some of the world’s most incredible natural wonders. The episodes focus on anything from emotional stories to unusual animals. Filmmakers are provided with funding for 100 days of filming out in the habitat of the chosen subject, making for some incredible cinematography. Stunning visuals combined with the voice over from wildlife aficionado David Attenborough, give you everything you need to absorb a full 60 minutes of educational gold.

If watching TV isn’t quite enough for you, or you would like to open up genuine new career paths; NCC Home Learning have a range of over 350 courses you can study from the comfort of your own home!

Concerns over the future of our planet are now more prominent than ever, with conservation being the objective of many worldwide organisations. The role of an environmental scientist is diverse and can cover a multitude of subjects from natural land resources to forestry and sustainability. Environmental science is defined by biology online as, “the branch of science that deals with the physical, chemical and biological components of the environment and their effects on organisms.”

We have taken a look at some of the more everyday issues that may indirectly affect the way in which you live your life and the interesting ways in which environmental scientists work to ensure the future prosperity of our beautiful planet.

Conservation and Environment Analysis

Land Resources

The management and conservation of habitats is crucial to the sustainability of manageable living conditions. Environmental scientist work tirelessly assessing current habitats and researching into effective ways to maintain the habitats. Intervention programmes are also compiled by skilled environmental scientists and have been implemented on sites across the globe, from the Amazon Rainforest to The Great Barrier Reef. The value of areas such as this are not just held in aesthetics, but in the role they play in maintaining a healthy and diverse environment.

Pollution

Pollution has become a crippling problem all over the world, with treaties now in place between some of the world’s biggest nations to implement strict rules regarding the reduction of greenhouse gasses in their respective countries. Environmental science has had a huge impact on the way in which people view the atmosphere and how our actions impact climate change and inevitably the way in which we live. Pollution control remains a priority for environmental science departments and discovering new ways to power the modern world without having such a negative effect on our atmosphere.

Forestry and Sustainability

Environmental change and the constant demand for economic expansion has led to the deforestation of large areas of rainforest. Managing forests as a vital resource is an incredibly important role for an environmental scientist to take. Looking at the impacts on indigenous species and incorporating the safety of their preservation while also dealing with political agendas can be extremely challenging.

Environmental scientists in many ways are modern day superheroes and the work they do will have some impact on everyone. If you would like to learn more about this subject, NCC offer an Environmental Science Diploma.

What is Home Learning?

Home learning is a great way for individuals to study at a time and pace to suit you. For many, it is becoming an increasingly popular method of study over more traditional classroom taught sessions. You will have the ability to plan and schedule your own time. There are five main benefits of home learning courses which we will explore further.

• Choice

There are a number of distance learning providers on the market who offer a range of courses. Home learning is becoming an increasingly popular method of study. It is a great way for people to study at a time and pace to suit the individual. NCC Home Learning are a training provider with 15 years’ experience in providing training solutions. NCC offer over 350 courses, so you are sure to find something to match your needs and interests. Subjects range from Acrylic Nails to Zoology.

• Flexibility

Do you want the flexibility to study at your own time and pace? If the answer is yes, then home learning may be ideal for you! Students have the choice to study full-time or part-time which gives learners the freedom to study when it suits you.

• Cost

Home learning is an affordable method of gaining an education. It can be argued that it is a preferred choice over more traditional routes such as university. Home learning is an extremely cost effective way of achieving a qualification. Such programmes cost a lot less than courses that can be taken in a schooling environment. It eliminates the need for travelling to and from classes, which will save learners money on the cost of commuting. The good thing about home learning is you have the flexibility to still earn an income around studying. Typically there are less space limitations and materials needed.

• Social

Home learning courses can provide students with the opportunity to communicate with a range of people from different locations. If you were to study at a local college, you are limited to the amount of contacts you can meet. Many distance learning providers have a student forum which is a great way to chat to people who have the same interests as you, or who may be studying the same programme.

It can be said that home learning can provide a wide range of networking opportunities. In the more traditional classroom taught sessions you are restricted to a smaller number of people, making your networking opportunities limited. Home Learning enables students to stay in their comfort zone, which may help to reduce any other stress.

• Location

Students who choose to complete a home learning course have the option to study at home or at work. Distance learning allows students to study anywhere with a PC and internet access. Home learning programmes eliminate the need to attend classroom sessions. This method of learning provides students with the opportunity to network with a range of different people from different locations

Opportunities

Home Learning courses provide students with a more in depth understanding of the subject area being studied. It is debatable whether students who study from home will learn better when they have the freedom to study at a place and time they choose. Knowledge gained will leave you in good stead for the future. Home learning courses will enable you to enhance your career prospects, which is ideal for individuals who would like to have a change of career, or those of you who would like to progress further in your current job.

So if you think you have the motivation and drive needed to complete a course, then you may like to consider enrolling on to a home learning programme today!
